Henri Matisse

I chose Henri Matisse's painting Luxe, Calme, et Volupté (Luxury, Calm, and Desire), 1904 because it was the one painting out of the 4 that really drew my attention. Matisse started the art movement of Fauvism which uses staccato brushstrokes, the white of the canvas showing through, and non-naturalistic, expressive color and detail. His use of light brush strokes and all of the different colors really makes his artwork stand out. Even with the small brush strokes and the bright colors, he still is able to make a scene where you can see that it is people having a picnic on the beach.
