Edward Hopper

Office in a Small City, 1953 - Edward Hopper

Office in a Small City (1953)

After looking through Edward Hopper's artwork, I chose Office in a small City, due to the emphasis on the themes of solitude and isolation. The man in the painting is in a small office looking outside the window. He shows no emotion and seems as if he is daydreaming. He is detached from the outside world and is focused on his thoughts. The effect of a lonely office is created by having the office placed in upper floors where he is isolated from the ground and is placed in a spacious environment. Although he is isolated, he still seems to be trapped inside the small office and remains framed by the window.
