TED Talk

Genevieve Von Petzinger's TED Talk consisted of intriguing discoveries made through art found in caves. The earliest form of written communication was recorded during the Ice Age with cavemen as the artists. As time went by, certain characters used in the paintings developed into more complex symbols.
I was able to relate early cave paintings to Jean Michel Basquait's modern day graffiti paintings due to the symbolism they both contain.

Basquait's painting, Boy and Dog in a Johnny Pump (1982) depicts what seems obvious and simple, yet complex picture of a boy with his dog. With vibrant colors, Basquait was able to capture the confusing and loud scene of New York City and incorporated his style influenced by his heritage. I enjoyed this piece in particular because much like early cave paintings, Basquait portrays a simple figure with much more meaning behind it. The symbolism in both old and modern art remains and can be interpreted in various manners.
