Michelangelo
Caravaggio is an Italian painter who is known for his unique and violent
paintings. Caravaggio’s paintings are seen to have a dramatic use of light and
dark. He uses these powerful color contrasts to emphasize what is important in
his work. I chose the painting, Calling of St. Matthew, because I felt it
really showed how he used contrast to make the picture powerful. This painting
depicts when Matthew is being called to follow Jesus. The detailed facial
expressions and gestures show how it was an unexpected moment. Along with the
facial expressions, the lighting is what brings everything together and brings
out the importance of this moment.
