Judith Beheading Holofernes

This painting is my favorite of the two Judith Beheading Holofernes paintings because I really like the use of light. It's interesting to see the bright white shirt of Judith with the rest of the painting being very dark. I also thought that it was interesting that experts say the painting is meant to be viewed from the right rather than the middle. Before researching this painting I would have thought the center was most important because it shows the action of the beheading. Now i see that the women performing the action are more important to see first. Judith is performing this task to overcome tyranny and he face is determined. The older servant is eagerly awaiting the detached head. These two characters create a lot of depth and drama in the painting.
