Van Gogh only used three shades of yellow to create sunflowers. This is my favorite work by van Gogh. It's pretty funny how someone in so much pain paints something so beautiful and full of life. But, even in painting sunflowers which are full of life you can see them wilting and falling in a duffle way that communicates some form of sadness. Vincent had stated that sunflowers convey gratitude ,but, what he is so grateful for, after making numerous copies of this painting, is unknown to me.
