This painting by Paul Gauguin is a self portrait based on the hero of Les Miserables, Jean Valjean. I am very intrigued by this painting because he portrays himself as this fictional hero. The use of bright colors demonstrates great contrast with the dark portrait. His detail in his portrait is very well done and he uses shadows and light to help bring tone to the portrait.
