TED talk response
The TED talk given by Genevieve von Petzinger made me think a lot more about the depth and reason behind what we know as cave paintings. I have heard of cave painting being one of the first forms of art, and that they mainly depicted scenes that were common in people of that times every day life. What I had not thought about previously, is that these pictures have become a way to visually communicate between people of the same age, but more importantly between people separated by any number of years. I feel that the jean michel basquiat painting above is related to Genevieve von Petzinger talk because first of all we see the depiction of an animal which is a common image found in caves and because this image depicts a common behavior. This painting shows a person guiding a cow which may be an important and common task for someone like a farmer. Another reason I believe this painting is related is because of its use of common symbols and shapes. In the talk it was discussed that simple shapes like circles, rectangles and lines were commonly used to convey meaning. In this painting there is a simple circle that could be being used to depict the sun.
