Gold Griot (1984) by Jean Michel Basuaits
Genevieve Von Petzinger’s TED Talk, explained how graphic communication
is able to be preserved for years in order for others to interpret it, which is
a really cool way to think about art. In my opinion, Jean Michel Basquaits
paintings do have similar traits to these cave paintings in the form of
abstract shapes. Jean uses a lot of abstract shapes within his works, and I think
it gives it a very primitive and ancient touch. In this painting called
Gold Griot (1984), the contrast of colors made this painting stand out
to me. I really like how abstract and tight this painting is, and the use of gold
and black in the face. The shapes are really basic in this painting but are
able to create this distinct ancient looking creature. Also i thought the wooden background was really cool, and complemented the figure nicely. So, I do think that the
paintings in the video are comparable to Jeans works in a sense, but Jeans
paintings are way more complex.
