Judith Beheading Holofernes

Out of the two paintings, I favored Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith Slaying Holofernes. After researching about the artist and her painting I found it fascinating that she used emotions built up from experiences in her life to contribute to this painting. Artemisia Gentileschi's painting was inspired by Caravaggio's technique using light and dark. I learned that Artemisia was raped at the age of 18 and I felt that this painting was a way to describe her revenge. I think that the way she painted the look that the woman has on her face depicted a calm and focused emotion in such a brutal action scene. This scene is about Judith, who represents virtue and chastity, who seduces her enemy, General Holofernes, because he is about to destroy her city. She ends up killing him making Judith a hero and a powerful woman. It is amazing how Artemisia depicts powerful women in her paintings to represent that women are not weak, especially after her traumatic rape.
