Caravaggio

Some major reoccurring elements in Caravaggio's works were his use of light and dark to convey his art and his realistic, down to earth depiction of holy figures.  The panting The Death of the Virgin showcases both of these elements in a strong way. All of the light in this painting is focused on Mary and darkness, almost blackness surrounding the disciples. This is interesting to me to add light to something so dark as death, this may be to show her Holiness without outright depicting her as this out of touch mythical being and the darkness to convey the sorrow felt by the disciples. Another  interesting point to make is what Mary is wearing, she is dressed in red a common and simple color where as Mary is most often conveyed in light colors such a blue as a sign of her purity, but here she is just another common women.
