Edward Hopper

Office in a Small City, 1953 - Edward Hopper

Office in a Small City (1953)

After looking through Edward Hopper's artwork, I chose Office in a small City, due to the emphasis on the themes of solitude and isolation. The man in the painting is in a small office looking outside the window. He shows no emotion and seems as if he is daydreaming. He is detached from the outside world and is focused on his thoughts. The effect of a lonely office is created by having the office placed in upper floors where he is isolated from the ground and is placed in a spacious environment. Although he is isolated, he still seems to be trapped inside the small office and remains framed by the window.

Edward Hopper

The painting I picked by Edward Hopper is Rooms by the Sea, 1951. This painting really grabbed my eye because of the colors used and the lighting portrayed in the picture. This painting is the perfect example of solitude, loneliness, and isolation based on the image and the feeling it gives off. Because there is no one in the picture you really get the sense of solitude, loneliness, and isolation. However, the lighting in the picture adds a positive effect to it.

Edward Hopper

The painting House by the Railroad is my favorite painting by Edward Hopper.  It really caught my attention when i first saw it.  I like that he uses realism in a different aspect.  It doesn't have to be an exact copycat of a photo or human but your own interpretation of what you see that still looks real.  He really enjoyed impressionism and captures the shadows and lights on this painting beautifully.

Edward Hopper

This painting by Edward Hopper is called New York Movie and it was painted in 1939. I believe that this painting depicts clearly the ideas and his themes of loneliness, isolation, and solitude. I chose this painting because of the use of lighting to emphasize the individual (in this case the woman) who is by herself, isolated from her surroundings. I like how you can almost sense how she's feeling, and it makes the audience wonder what exactly she's thinking about. I like Edward Hopper a lot because you get a certain vibe from his paintings. It was also interesting to me how he used light not dark to emphasize the lonely, pondering woman.

Edward Hopper

The painting I chose is Automat by Edward Hopper created in 1927. I chose this painting because the themes loneliness, solitude and isolation are well represented. The color selection for the background and the women dressed in dark sipping her tea alone sets the scene.

Edward Hopper

The painting by Edward Hopper I chose was "Automat". I chose this painting because it shows his theme of isolation and loneliness. It makes you wonder what she is thinking and why she is sitting alone at night. It's a simple painting that tells a story that you can create. There are many reasons she may be there by herself but it makes you imagine different scenarios in your head and I think that was Hopper's intention while painting this.

Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper's painting the Long Leg, is a prime example of solitude. The deserted beach and the unattended sailboat really bring the feeling of being alone. Although there is a sense of loneliness, this painting brings about a feeling of relaxation. The colors he chose depict what seems to be a nice beach day with the sense of sunlight and warmth. I like how detailed the painting is, it makes it feel very realistic.

Girl at a Sewing Machine in 1921, Hopper's paintings of a women at the sewing machine by a window. I especially was intrigued by this painting because my grandmother is a painter and she has this painting in her home. I used to always look a this painting and not think about loneliness but I just like the realistic tone. It was cinematic for me, like she was about to pull up the dress to show her master piece. The tone and colors really make her an actual girl.

Edward Hopper

This piece is called Summer Interior by Edward Hopper 1909. I chose this piece due to the overall mood it represents. The woman looks as if she its miles away in her own head, battling with herself over a loss of some sort. The fact that she is partially nude shows that she is vulnerable, and not making eye contact shows that she does not care anymore. The shadowed room a also adds to this depressing scenario as well as the messy bed, which can be looked at as an extension of her own messy life. Overall i think that this piece portrays its message very well.

Edward Hopper

The painting above is painted by Edward Hopper and the name of the painting is Compartment C Car.  I chose this painting because the mystery in it intrigues me yet the landscape in the background is calming. The women adds a calming effective to this painting as well, she seems relaxed reading her book. The landscape in the window of the painting shows the time of day that it is night time, so I assume she is coming home from work. The choice of colors in this painting is a great choice everything blends so well. The details in the painting is impeccable.

Edward Hopper is a talented artist who captures the meaning of loneliness within almost every single one of his paintings. My favorite paintings Hopper has created are the pieces that involve lonesome buildings that apear to take place in the middle of nowhere. The architecture and beauty captured my interest and makes me think more into the storys within the painting. Most look like they are abandoned, while others have one ore two people living inside of that house inside of that painting telling a different story. I would like to focus my next art piece on a building or a short story within a building, cqpturing the loneliness that comes with some houses.

Edward Hopper

I was captivated by the Automat painting by Edward Hopper. What stands out about this painting is that it tells a story and the story that it tells is open to everyones interpretation of the painting.
The painting also comes of as being so realistic and I believe it's due to the detail he puts in. Anyone can just paint a table , but he does it in such a way that it is an eye opener. It also can be his use of dark and light colors to create this sense of reality in the painting. Since he decided to use different shades of black in the background it sets the viewer to get this sense of depression or loneliness which was what he was trying to persuade. After analyzing and observing the details in the painting you can see that he purposely added extra things to the painting to create a theme of loneliness. For instance, he  painted the chair to be pushed in on purpose to create this perception of solitude. Overall, there is so much talent presented in this painting and it's one of my favorite paintings by him.

Edward Hopper "room in Brooklyn"

I chose this painting by Edward Hopper called "room in Brooklyn" because I really liked the way it took on the isolation practice as well as the use of color. When I first looked at it I was really drawn to the beautiful vase of flowers and the brightly colored room. Then I looked deeper and I started to see the meaning and focus of the painting that was on the darkly colored woman. Because she is so darkly colored it makes me think that she is in a somber state and you can see that she is in isolation looking down on the street. The contrast in this painting really brings forth the story.

Edward Hopper

The painting that I think depicts loneliness and isolation the best is "Office in a Small City". In this painting, the man is sitting alone in a large office with no personal memorabilia on the desk or on the walls. Although the man has a window to look out of, the city itself also looks lonely and desolate. The man is also sitting in darkness with only the natural light coming in. Even his face looks grim and sad.

Edward Hopper- Morning Sun

I really thought this picture by Edward Hopper captured an intense amount of loneliness, solitude, and isolation compared to many of his other paintings. In this particular painting the room in which the woman is in is extremely plain. There is nothing on the walls, the bed sheets are white, her hair is pulled back into a simple bun, and even her night gown is a single, plain color. Hopper managed to show us the solitude of urban life. The room, assuming it is an apartment, is high above the streets so this painting will show the isolation aspect. There is also not a single person, bird, cloud, family picture, or plane signifying her loneliness.

Edward Hopper

I chose the painting "Cape Cod Evening," by Edward Hopper because he is known for painting realistic paintings and I really liked how it feels realistic in a way but in a way also looks fake.  The house looks isolated with there being nothing around them, they are just in the middle of the woods.  I really like the colors he used for the woman's dress and the color of the dog, the colors really stand out.  Behind the trees, he made it dark to make it seem like they are actually isolated and there is absolutely nothing around them.

Edward Hopper

This painting is called Automat, created by Edward Hopper in 1927. I chose this painting because I think it best describes the feelings isolation and solitude. The way Hopper uses the color black as the main focus of the painting gives it an eerie feeling. Surrounding the intense darkness there is a lonesome figure sitting in solitude. After researching Hopper, he clearly depicts solitude and isolation in several of his paintings.

EDWARD HOPPER

Sun in an Empty Room was painted by Edward Hopper in 1963. I chose this image because it is a perfect expression of isolation and solitude. Although no actual beings are in the room, the painting can still evoke those emotions. It does so by the mere act of being empty. There is no furniture, no paintings in the wall, no people inside it. The room's only host is the sunlight coming through the window and the shadows that it casts. The window itself is also plain and bare.

Fauvism

I really enjoyed the color scheme to this piece. The pattern and strokes used in this painting are unique and eye catching. I can tell there are figures in the image but they still manage to blend into the background. The unrealistic use of of different colors is what brings out the strokes even more.

Fauvism

Woman in a Chemise was created in 1906 by Andre Derain. This painting connected to be because the woman has personality roaring from the colors. It is painted toon like but still gives off the sense of realism. The artist really digs deep on the shadows and portrays a room that we can go into. This is french art at it's finest.

Fauvism

I really enjoy the origins of Fauvism. It's amazing how the name of this rebound art styles origin is an insult and that was taken and the artest themselves were able to turn it around to something beautiful. It is wild the colors the expression but it is wildly beautiful and different, it breaks the mold and that what good art tends to do.

Henri Matisse

I chose this painting by Henri Martisse in particular because his interpretation of a woman is quite different. He painted this women in a cartoon style , but that's what so unique about it. Although he painted the women as a cartoon you can still see the women as if it were a real person.  He does a good job with skin tone, not in this painting in particular because he made it more basic compared to other paintings. In his other painting you see use him use more detail with skin tone and it makes the painting stand out in comparison to his other paintings. He does a great job with details in his paintings, in this painting in particular you can see the details on the blouse that the women is wearing and it allows the painting to have life with just the details alone.

Henri Matisse

I chose this painting by Henri Matisse because I liked the meaning of it, being; the meaning of the here and now. In the article it says that he used different types of brush strokes, which I found interesting. He also left a lot of canvas in the painting, which is very stocking because I have never seen a painter actually leave that space. The story behind how he got into painting also interested me as well.

Fauvism

I chose this painting, Fishing Boats Collioure, by Andre Derain because the shapes and colors drew my attention. The colors he used are vaguely realistic except they are intensified. This type of art can best be described as full of vibrancy. The article was interesting to me because I have learned about French artists, such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, in the past, but not about Fauvism or the artists behind this incredible movement. At first glance I did not realize that this was an oil painting, it almost seemed acrylic to me. I also like his use of perspective with the boats in the front large and the mountains in the distant small.

Fauvism

I found Henri Matisse to be the most interesting artist in the article. Based on the fact that he was the base inspiration for the fauvism movement, which then went on to influence other abstract art styles such as cubism. Also that he became a painter because of a sickness early on in his life, beauty comes from tragic or bad events in life. After searching for his paintings I found "the snail" to be the one that caught my eye. Mainly because this work is so different from everything else around it in that if I hadn't seen the name I would have no idea what this painting was of.

Fauvism?

The articles were very different and interesting.  I learned a lot from them. I chose the painting Luxe, Calme, et Volupte by Henri Matisse.  I chose this painting because it is named perfectly and very colorful. The paintings name means luxury, calm and desire. I felt very calm when I viewed this painting for the first time. The way Matisse painted this with such great detail with a unique technique. The staccato brush strokes are amazing. The choice of color is to perfection.

Fauvism

The artist I was drawn to the most from the article about Fauvism is Henry Matisse. I found his background very interesting. His introduction to art was during his recovery from an illness. Matisse was an important part of the Fauvism movement. The painting that stood out to me among his other paintings is the Women with a Hat, which is a painting of his wife. I liked this painting because of the vibrant colors and the brushwork. I like the precision in the face and how the rest of her body and the background was painted freely with different patterns and a mixture of colors. I also found it interesting how in the description it includes her having a gloved hand holding a paper fan because when I look at the painting it all blends in as a part of her dress.

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was a leading figure in Fauvism and one of the most influential artists of the modern era. I appreciate his use of bright vivid colors in his paintings and the technique he used of pointillism, which is the use of small dots of paint to form an image. Matisse would also reduce flat shapes in his paintings. The painting I chose is one of Mattise, which is called Luxe, Calme, et Volupte (luxury, calm, and desire), I chose this painting because it shows the route he took as an artist stepping away from realism and taking a non-realistic approach with his paintings. In this painting, you can see the white of the canvas, the colors that are used are vibrant and not realistic with the structure and layout of the painting. But this is what I enjoyed so much from this painting and his work that because of his techniques and color choice it brought a complete different vibe to the painting itself.

House at Chatou by Maurice de Vlaminick

Out of all the paintings by Maurice de Vlaminick, this one stood out the most to me.  The colors are very vibrant and the style I really enjoy.  The thick application makes the mixture of colors more pronounced in my opinion.

Henri Matisse

I chose this painting, "Luxe" because it really stuck out to me.  It looks very different compared to other paintings that have clean strokes.  This painting loots like the artist painted with dots, which is called staccato brushstrokes.  I also like how he went from dark in the bottom right and then fades to light going towards the top right.  He used expressive colors, which made this painting stand out to me more than the other paintings that I saw throughout this article. I also liked how this was a landscape painting and not a self portrait.

Henri Matisse

The painting I enjoyed the most of Henri Matisse was the Goldfish. The painting is simplistic yet very elegant. The use of realistic colors and blending of all the colors is executed beautifully. The fish look like they actually submerged in the water. The painting gives the viewer a sense of relaxation.

Fauvism

This painting is Called Big Ben and was painted by Andre Derain. It was painted around 1905. And was painted using oil on canvas. This is not the first time I've seen this painting. I've always loved how abstract it looks. And although parts of it is very monotone it is still very vibrant. I do appreciate that i know what this style of painting is called now (fauvism). The article is also very interesting. Especially saying that this type of painting was looked down upon at its time. I think these paintings are very bright and cheery. I also noticed with most fauvism painting that the artist used very many hard short brush strokes, which I thought was interesting.

Henri Matisse

The painting I chose by Henri Matisse is the Luxe, Calme, et Volupté. This painting really stuck out to me because of his use of colors and how the texture looked. I noticed in his work that he quite often uses vibrant colors. I found the article to be very interesting and educating because I was unaware of the Fauvism Movement. One thing I found interesting is that Fauves stands for “wild beasts”, which was an allied group of French painters that all had shared interests.

One of the most famous Fauvist work, Matisse's Luxe, Calme, et Volupte (luxury, calm, desire), stood out too me when looking over the article. the piece was finished in 1904 and was expressed through color and detail. the people are not life like at all but it gives the piece a sense of art than realism. the color technique was mostly warm colors used and cool colors to portray the water along side the women on the shore of Paris. I love the boat and the picnic theme in the painting. the title definitely suits the collaboration of the painting. looking at the artist other paintings this one is really the only one that caught my eye and stood out the most.

Fauvism

The color scheme of this painting is what really got my attention. I really like the color choice and how Henri Mattisse chose to blend the various colors together. The application of the paint and the brushwork really makes this painting unique. The way he made the brushstrokes allow portions of the white canvas to come through. I really like how he did this and its something I usually don’t see often on most paintings.
