After watching the fim on Van Gogh in class, I realized how he struggled as an artist. Van Gogh had been fired from the Church for living among the poor and then turned to art. Although his brother sold paintings and attempted to help Vincent sell his work, he was unsuccessful. Through years of misery and sorrow, Van Gogh painted and suffered until he died. He ate paint and cut his ear off. After learning all this from his background, I chose the painting At Eternity's Gate because of the emotions that are conveyed. The man is weeping and you can almost feel the impotence and frustration he is experiencing. He is wearing blue which represents sadness and although there is a warm fire in the background, he is still depicted with cool tones. He seems to be alone and isolated.
